The Illinois Teachers Loan Repayment Program was created to encourage academically talented Illinois students to pursue and continue teaching in Illinois schools in low-income areas. It can match up to $5,000 in a loan repayment that an applicant received through the Federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program. The federal program will cancel $5,000 of Federal Stafford student loans, borrowed after October 1, 1998, if the borrower teaches full-time for five consecutive years in a low-income elementary or secondary school.
